Silence: A lost Sunnah

Picture this:You are invited to a wedding party and you are sitting in the midst of uncles that are talking about Islam, politics and the economy. One goes ” The present crises in our countries is because America is destroying us.” The other goes “Of course all bad you see is because America has its agents as our leaders!”. Conspiracy theories, rants surround the conversation. Then all of a sudden after a long debate between two uncles a point comes up about Islam. MashAllah then all of the gathering becomes a gathering of the great fuqaha of our times. They start quoting the Quran and the hadith even though they don’t know Arabic , they still insist that this is what they read and know it is the truth. Now the debate shifts to the translation. “Oh I read this translation and it says so and so!” The hadith says so and so. Then all of a sudden other people start pouncing in on the debate and offering their own ijtihaad. Before you know it it is time for Isha. Some of them are so caught up in the moment of the discussion that they become emotional to the point that they neglect their prayers. And after all this debate now its time to eat and be filled. So now the focus is more on the food rather the discussion. After filling the tank the debate is ended with handshakes and the place left for some other group for the future to repeat the above process with variations.

Picture another scenario: You are going to the Jummua’h Khutbah and the Khateeb happens to be a person who does not have a beard is wearing a Morrocan jilabiyya. On top of that he is supposedly very successful in secular life and he is talking about Greek philosophy and how Islam are one and the same thing. He is talking about Aristotle. Aristotle said “this this”. He is portraying Islam is all peace. Islam is all peace brother. The result is you have a confused youth and a confused gathering. When you go to the Jummua’h khuthbah you want to be rejuvinated. It is said the Prophet(SAW) would get red when delivering the khuthbah to emphasize a point so that the people could understand the gravity of what he was trying to convey!. Today people go on the minbar and they don’t even quote a single Quranic verse or a hadith. They use Greek philosophy and personal reasoning to explain issues that relate to us. So I went up to the Imam and said to him here is a great book on how to deliver a khuthbah. Please let meknow what you think. His response ” Brother please don’t come to my khutbah!”.

The cloak of Islam cannot be sold for anything. If we cannot say the truth we must act on this Hadith: Abû Hurayrah relates that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should show hospitality to his neighbor. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should show hospitality to his guest.” [ Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim ]
More details on why we should be silent is here.

So how many of us practicing this Sunnah. If you cannot speak the haqq dont distort the meanings to fit your thinking. Because my aql and your aql and every aql on the face of the planet wether its a human or Jinn cannot understand Allah’s Hikmah(Wisdom) and His Kalam i.e. Quran. If you don’t know just say you don’t know and be silent. Why is it so hard for us to be silent? I have seen many great scholars who prefer to be silent then talk. They don’t talk much. However when they open their mouth all others are silent and must listen. Why so? They have something called Ilm that Allah has Blessed them with out of his Mercy. One sentence can cause us to go the Hellfire and one sentence can cause us to go to Jannah. So we must think before we speak. We must be on guard. We must discipline our tongue to use it as less as possible and use it ONLY when we are qualified to.

I remember once I was on a trip with a Shaykh and he saw some youth making fun of certain aspects of Islam. The Shaykh got upset and got up and said: “Let me narrate to you a story of Imam Ahmed. He said once Imam Ahmed was sitting in a gathering and they were reciting a verse from Surah yusuf يُوسُفُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَـذَا وَاسْتَغْفِرِي لِذَنبِكِ إِنَّكِ كُنتِ مِنَ الْخَاطِئِينَ . V28; at that same moment a person by the name of Yusuf walked in and they were on this verse. All of them started laughing. Imam Ahmed got up and said if you do not all get up and renew your shahada now I will impose the hadd of Rida on you!” Food for our thought.

Also we must be very careful when we are watching humorous shows. They have alot of things that must be taken seriously. Like the Christians or Jews we do not make fun of our religion. We do not! Allah has forbidden us from doing so in the Quran.
And when you proclaim the call for As-Salat [call for the prayer (Adhan)], they take it (but) as a mockery and fun; that is because they are a people who understand not.

This happened to me once when I was in college. I was sitting reading the Quran. There was a Christian who happened to be sitting with me. My laptop was on but I had not turned down the volume. The athan software started. This Christian he looked around and figured out it is coming from my laptop and he initiated a smile which became a mocking comment which I wish not to reproduce here. I asked why do you smile and say this? He said this is something funny. How can you listen to this five times a day! Audhubillah! And interestingly I had just read this ayah 10 minutes before this incident!

I pray to Allah to forgive us, I ask Allah to help us guard our tongues and I ask Allah to enter us into Firdausul Ala!

Eman: Ups and downs

Well another weekend has come. Alhamdulillah. Well lately for the past few months I feel less enthusiastic islamically. I just miss myself 6 months ago. I used to be so enthuisiastic but sadly that is not the case. One of my Shaykh told me this is a part of our life. Sometimes we are up and sometimes we are down. Then he quoted a hadith about the same issue.  He said just follow the Sunnah i.e. when you are in high spirits keep on doing good deeds to a little more then what you can do for it will help you when you are in low spirits. I asked how? He said it will help you do the things that you did when you were in highly enthusiastic but you may slack of a little bit so its good you do more then you can during this time. For example if you pray tahajjud during high times every night then when you are less high you will probably pray every week or so. Of course this is just an example and we should try to emulate the Porphet(SAW) because he forbade us from praying every night.

Imam Siraj Wahhaj delivered the khuthbah this Friday. A powerful khuthbah really plays an important role in your high or low. I look forward to going to the khuthbah so the speaker can challenge me. One such speaker is Sami Hilali. He is only known in our community. mashAllah I heard his khuthbah twice and mashAllah he really drives the message home. I couldnt find the khuthbah that I really wanted you to hear but here is another khuthbah and good reminder for Ramadhan as we have only six weeks left inshAllah. Here it is.

In the end I make dua for myself that Allah Guide me! Oh Allah Guide me! O Allah give me strength and give me the taste of sweet eman! Amin!

Reflections on tonight’s lecture by Shaikh Suhaib Webb

Assalam o alaykum, Alhamdulillah since moving to America I have not seen scholars lesser then when I was in Saudia. SubhanAllah tonoght Shaikh Suhaib Webb captivated with the crowd with his American vernacular explanation of Surah Al Kahaf. The Shaikh satrted off by pointing out the background behind why the Sura was revealed. Then he went in to explain the first verse. He broke it down in to nine points stating that Allah Praises Himself and then he says it is He who has revealed “THE BOOK” to his servant. He said an important point to note here is the “the book”. He explained it in terms of if I say the man that means you are the man. So Allah is saying there is no book on the face of planet or beyond which compares to the Quran. Also pointed out how the Prophet(SAW) said in Khutbha Haja inna asdaqal hadithe kitabillah……..And he expounded on the verses that show that this book has no doubt in it. Overall mashAllah may Allah preserve Imam Suhaib Webb for making us understand the deen. He is offering Ijazas this sumer for people who wann learn. I encourage all of you to attend. For more infor check out his blog (

Too tired. inshAllah see you all soon.

Wasalam o alaykum

String Theory

Assalam o alaykum all, Alhamdulillah I had a good day today.

I had an important submission due today but (YAWN) that can wait. I have bigger things in life to worry about walhamdulillah i rabbil alameen.

IN the evening I had dinner with a good friend of mine and had a halaqa with my shaykh. After isha I sat down on and searched for String theory on youtube. To my amazement I saw three documentaries and a short graphical explanation of the theory. Here are the links

Disclaimer: This will take alot of time to understand and you will probably be dizzy and disoriented after viewing this.

SubhanAllah! I after watching this and reading up on this I just sat in my place looking up to the wall, then I walked out and looked at the sky and thought SubhanAllah. What has Allah Created! So perfect. The string theory aims to explain everything. From the minutest particle to the universe we see. Stepehen Hawkings was once asked what came before the Big Bang? His answer was “thats like asking what is north of norht pole?”. So what came before the big bang? Well the documentary suggests that M-theory says there are many membranes on which universes float. They are of different shapes and sizes. Since they are floating they sometimes collide with each other and different instances of time. When they collide the effect you see is what we see in the form of a big bang and matter is a resultant of that singularity that has exploded. Now lets go to the minute. Inside of an atom are electrons, protons and neutrons. Inside of them are energy particles called qurakswhose direction signify thier energy. What makes these quarks? It is vibrating string. They are round and come in vareity of shapes. These strings if you were to view them would be like you looking at the universe and trying to look for a tree on earth. So there was this physicist who said you can never know the exact location of a particle and thus came up with the uncertainity prinicple which is a building block of classical physics. Now scientists say that the reason for this is that these particles are infact stepping between different dimesnions and thus we cannot know where they are at a given point in time.

This is just in a nutshell of what I understood. I am very fascinated with this theory. I kinda of have a theory that I came up with long time back. I pondered and said could our universe be the ultimate sum of all these multiverses? Could it?

At the end of the day after learning all this the human being needs to humble himself before the Creator and just realize that we have a purpose in life. Like the documentary said we maybe just an small universe floating in a infinite number of universes or membranes for that matter. It provoked me into thinking ok now what even if we are so what? If I die will this mystery be solved by me going into the next world? The answer is no. I have a different purpose for which I am Created. My purpose is

“And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).”

Also another thing that I realized is I cannot understand Allah(SWT) if I cannot understand His Creation. SubhanAllah! He is Al-Khaliq. Can I understand his Makhlooq? No. I can just look at it, observe it and say subhanAllah wal Hamdulillah! I just submit. I cannot run away from this fact. I remember I was in a class and the Shaykh said that Ibn Taymiyyah was of the opinion that Allah has been creating. So many different creations that we are not aware of.  That is why Allah says in the Quran about Himself

Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind). “If the sea were ink for (writing) the Words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished, even if we brought (another sea) like it for its aid.”

Honour Killing

Bismillah Alhamdulillah. All Praise is due to Allah who is the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. We testify that the only diety worthy of worship is Allah(SWT) and that Muhammad(SAW) is His slave and Final Messenger.

Having given a testimony of faith we submit our way of life to none other then the Will of Allah. We do not question Allah because as humans our capabilities are very limited. Today, when I was reading the news I read shocking news. Refer to this.

Aside from all the emotional things that I want to say I will hold off on that inshAllah. Some Muslims try to justify honor killings claiming it is sanctioned by the Shariah. SubhanAllah! The Prophet(SAW) was sent to eradicate killing little daughters who had committed no crime yet people use baseless arguments to justify thier positions. A formal and a trustworthy answer by the scholars of AhluSunnah wal Jama’ah can be found here. The perpetrator of such a crime must be tried in an Islamic court and punished accordingly.

In Islam everything goes back to your belief. When you testify the Shahada you are infact testifying that you will abide by the rules set forth by Allah. One of the things we have been forbidden to do is murdering someone without a just cause. There is no justificiation for such a hideous crime. Another thing is did the father lose his temper during the argument? It could very well be possible and the fact that he was weeping shows that he really loved her but his anger overtook him. In other words Shaytan overtook him and he did that hideous crime.

Another important point is parents who are still stuck in that cultural warp of forcing children to get married without thier wishes and from back home, really need to realize that they are hurting themselves by making unreasonable demands that have no Shari basis. I have noticed among the Pakistani community the cultural aspect is so hard to let go. And somewhat the Egyptians. They have put the Book of Allah aside and are following thier own desires. The culture is important but it can never take precedence over what Allah and His Messenger have given us. NEVER! IT IS UNACCEPTABLE!

Sometimes these killers are so narrow minded that they forget the rights of a child. The child has a right to a good and pious environment. Have you given that to them? Have you shown them what is the true way? Or have you tried to find the true way yourself? Maybe your child has found a good way and you are lacking that? My brain cannot just take this dhulm. I fail to understand how someone can kill thier own daughter because of such a small thing. I dont want an honor like this.

May Allah Protect us and our dhuriyya from such sins.

Wastaghfirullah wal hamdulillah i rabil alameen.

A lesson taught and a lesson learnt

It was the 4th of July weekend here so I had a lot of time on my hands. Just before the weekend I had a talk with a Christian reagrding the ten commandments. He was misquoting all the commandments. I corrected him on the first one. He said” Thou shalt love your God with all your strength”. I said to him that is not the first commandment. Then I said what is the second one. He said “Thou shalt not steal”. I had had just enough of this so I said you are misquoting the ten commandments.  I quoted the first commandment and the second commandment to him and he strayed away from the whole discussion by saying that no one can live up to the ten commandments becasue we in the flesh will always commit sins and need a lamb for expiation of our sins. I thought hmm does this have anything to do with what we are discussing?

My encounter left me preplexed and bewildred and I satrted digging deeper into what the commandments are. So I used Shaykh Google and found out

For argument purposes I am taking the Jewish version becasue I feel that is the more accurate one and more in line with Islam. Lets analyze the first commandment he misquoted. Thou shalt love your God with all your strenght. This is what the Muriji’ah sect did. God is love and He is all about Love. No doubt Allah is Al-Wadood. They went to an extreme and said that since God loves us we are free to do what we want. That is why Allah said “not the path of those who earned your Wrath or who went Astray”.(Surah Al faitha).  Our scholars have said that the ones who went astray were the Christians. May Allah Protect us from such corruption and Guide us to that which is the truth!

The second commandment states that you shall not have any other gods beside me. This is pretty obvious. This destroys the whole concept of the trinity. Now my Christian friend was very surprised to know this.

Lesson taught: Learn the commandments, implement them, DON’T MISQUOTE RELIGIOUS SCRIPTURES even if that  goes against your doctrine and DONT MAKE TAHREEF!

Lesson learnt: Learn the Quran by heart and the ten commandments so you can invite people to the way of Islam.

Allah says in the Quran ” Say, “O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you – that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah .” But if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him].” (Surah Al-Imran V64).

It is very important to know this becasue Christians will not like to talk about this. They know they will lose most of the arguments when they start talking about the commandments. Instead they resort to using the Bible and different variants of the commandments to prove thier doctrine.

Wallah u alam.

Subhana kallahumma wa bihamdika ash-haduana la illaha illa ant wa astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

Liberating women

Ruslana Korshunova was a Russian supermodel who plummeted to her death a week ago. Invesigators concluded her death a suicide. So why did someone so successful (in the material world) have to commit suicide. Those who like to read magazines when they are checking out from Walmart, Target etc. find these people as having everything and imagine thier lives to be like a fairy tale. Not only are they successful they have fame behind them.

So what went wrong?

Interestingly, I found an article on The article speaks for itself on how the Western concept of liberating women has taken a miserable toll on its practitioners.

For instance read this “The girls get preyed on by everybody, and everyone has their own agenda,” one of the promoters says. SubhanAllah! There are beasts who want to prey on these girls just to satisfy there material desires and once done with fulfilling there desires of money and even lust just leave them off to be preyed on by more. These women are drinking, revealing thier awrah in front of men for what? For money. But they are not happy. This particular model also had parents that were really poor. So she wanted to send money back home.

Another point that really is discomforting and chills my spine is the fact that what was this person doing when she was dying? Just hours before she was watching a movie about a love story with a former boyfriend, and came home, had some drinks and then death came. As we die in this world that’s how we will be reserructed in the next. May Allah make us among the saliheen and give us a good end. One of my shuyookh told me that a person was dying and he fell unconcious. He got up and said “Take me to the woman by the tree of gold that I just saw.” SubhanAllah! This person is seeing Jannah when he is dying. And when he died he screamed La ilah a illAllah such that every person in the street heard him. So we should take sometime out to think are we trying for husnul Khatimah or a bad end? Allah says in the Quran “اقرأ كتابك كفى بنفسك اليوم عليك حسيبا” Translation:[It will be said], “Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant.”

Rape is a common practice in this circle. These young women are so promiscuously dressed that there clients and photographers try to rape them. When I imagine what goes on it just shocks me. Solution: Do hijab and dont talk to strang men. AND TO MEN LOWER YOUR GAZE!!(Islam has the answer only if we implemented it).

One last point is that Islam did not reach her in time. She did not learn what the truth was and so many countless others. We need to be on guard and keep inviting people to the truth. Imagine her life had she found the fruit of Iman. She would be so happy that finally no more depression! Fruits of Iman. Belief is so crucial for our existence. That is why the people who make dhikr of Allah and those that don’t are like the living and the dead. The soul’s sutenance is Allah’s dhikr. If a righteous person misses one salat he feels he is dead and has missed alot. Do we have that feeling or are we dead?

Lessons to be learnt: Be careful of Shyatan’s deception.

Seek Allah’s refuge and make contionous istaghfar.

Learn Surah Annur and teach it to our household.

Detach ourself from material desires by fasting.

Teach our boys to lower thier gaze and our girls to be modest in thier dressing. And I have seen this countless times in masajid that women are dressed with just a head covering and after that its jeans etc. Be mindful of where you are going.

Take a class on Aqeedah and increase your iman and taste the sweetness of Iman.

Please forgive and correct me if I have said anything wrong. If there was any good in it, it was from Allah and any bad then it was from Shaytan and myself.

Subhana kallahumma wa bihamdika ash-haduana la illaha illa ant astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk, Ameen.
